Texas Drone Delivery Map: LAANC Airspace and Reach

A shortlist of drone delivery nest sites across Texas. Wherobots scored 100 candidate sites on the people within 10 km, the FAA LAANC airspace ceilings above them, and the towers and power lines nearby.

How the map is built

Place candidate sites

100 candidate nests sit on a 0.1 degree grid across the Texas metros. They mark areas to study, not surveyed pads.

Count who each site reaches

US Census ACS estimates give the people and households inside each site’s 10 km delivery circle.

Map the airspace

The FAA’s UAS Facility Maps list the LAANC ceiling for each grid cell, from 0 to 400 ft above ground. Areas with no facility-map cell are uncontrolled Class G airspace.

Flag the obstacles

Overture towers and OpenStreetMap power lines are the obstacles to low flight. Few towers carry a height, so the obstacle count is a floor.

FAQ

Texas drone delivery map FAQ

What is a LAANC map?

LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) is the FAA system for approving drone flights in controlled airspace. Its facility maps set the highest altitude an approval can grant in each grid cell, from 0 to 400 ft above ground.

Does a 400 ft ceiling mean a drone can fly there?

No. The ceilings omit temporary flight restrictions, part-time security restrictions, Part 135 conditions and local approvals to fly beyond visual line of sight.

How were the sites ranked?

82 of the 100 candidates are operable. The top 21 are the operable sites ordered by the people within 10 km, and together they reach 5,070,748 people.

Which obstacles does the map show?

Towers and masts from Overture Maps and transmission lines from OpenStreetMap, near each candidate site.

What did Wherobots compute?

Wherobots joined the candidate sites to the FAA facility-map grid, the ACS population, and the towers and power lines, then scored and ranked every site.
