What are spatial units and how much do they cost?

A Spatial Unit (SU) is an amount of computational horsepower provisioned to a serverless runtime. A single SU provides similar capacity as a 32vCPU Apache Sedona cluster running on the latest stable Apache Spark runtime. For reference, an Amazon EC2 m7i.8xlarge on-demand instance with 32v CPUs in the AWS US-West-2 region costs $1.61 per hour.

Cloud Region $ per Spatial Unit
AWS US West (Oregon) $1.50
AWS US East (N. Virginia) $1.50
AWS US East (Ohio) $1.50
AWS EU West (Ireland) $1.67
AWS AP South (Mumbai) $1.58

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the Wherobots community edition?

Wherobots community edition was built to deliver a free experience for teams to try out some of the capabilities. This is currently available, however we will be sunsetting Community in the coming months. Our users have the best experience and access to the broad set of Wherobots capabilities in Pro tier, which is where we recommend users start with the free trial.

What are Wherobots runtimes?

A runtime is a dedicated, distributed cluster of cloud-based virtual machines that you don’t need to manage. The amount of concurrent computing power available to your workloads on a runtime is measured in Spatial Units and is based on the type and size of the runtime. Visit our user documentation to learn more about the runtimes and the rate spatial units are emitted for each type by size.

How does the monthly usage minimum work?

The monthly usage minimum starts when the free trial period expires. Customers pay $95 at the beginning of each monthly billing cycle moving forward, which provides $95 worth in usage credits that expire after 90 days. Credits are non-refundable, and the upfront payment for the usage minimum will recur monthly as long as the subscription to the Professional Edition is active and the subscription can be canceled at any time. This monthly minimum usage subscription provides access to the Professional Edition with additional support.

Are there other costs?

Data transfer and managed storage costs are free. If we start to charge for it in the future, we will give you plenty of notice so you can confidently manage your costs.

What does the free trial include?

14 days or $95 in usage credits, whichever comes first. During the trial you get full Professional access — all runtime sizes (General Purpose and Memory Optimized), Job Runs, full RasterFlow, S3 / Databricks Unity / AWS Glue integrations, MCP server, native visualizations, and SSO/MFA.

What happens when the trial ends?

If a valid payment method is on file, your organization moves automatically to the paid Professional plan ($95/month minimum). If not, compute is disabled and a banner appears with an ‘Add a payment method’ CTA. Your data, notebooks, catalogs, configurations, and users are preserved — only the ability to launch compute is paused.

What is the Professional Support add-on?

A $1,000/month flat-fee add-on for Professional customers who want higher-touch support without moving to Innovation or Enterprise. It includes a private Slack channel with priority response 8×5 (business hours) plus best-effort architectural guidance. The add-on does not include usage credits and is in addition to your normal $95/month minimum. Contact us to activate.

What's the difference between Professional Support and Innovation?

Professional Support ($1,000/month) buys you faster support: a private Slack channel, 8×5 priority response, and best-effort architectural guidance. Innovation (#3,000/month) embeds Wherobots experts alongside your team — a Designated Spatial Architect partnered with your team, hands-on Data Engineering Support, and outcome-aligned engagement measured against your business KPIs.

What does Data Engineering Support cover?

Hands-on work from Wherobots data engineers on your production spatial pipelines: building and tuning ingestion, transformation, and output workflows; performance optimization on production workloads; integrations with your data stack (catalogs, warehouses, BI tools); and the production plumbing that gates spatial outcomes.

What does outcome-aligned engagement mean?

At the start of your Innovation contract year we capture the business KPIs your spatial work needs to move. Quarterly outcome reviews open with what shipped against those KPIs, what’s blocking, and what the next quarter’s priorities are. Your Designated Spatial Architect’s engagement is shaped by your KPIs, not by support ticket volume. The engagement is the commitment; the quarterly review is the course-correction mechanism.

Can I run Wherobots on my own Spark infrastructure?

On the Innovation and Enterprise tier, yes — where your infrastructure or data residency requires it, Bring Your Own Spark on your existing Spark (AWS EMR, Databricks, Google Dataproc, Microsoft Fabric, or self-managed) can be paired with Wherobots Cloud. BYOS provides a subset of Wherobots Cloud capabilities. For disconnected or air-gapped environments, the Enterprise tier is required.

Can I upgrade from Innovation to Enterprise mid-contract?

Yes. Any unused commit on your Innovation contract applies forward to the Enterprise contract. Enterprise upgrades are typical when customers need a Dedicated (full-time embedded) Spatial Architect, BYOCloud, disconnected/air-gapped BYOS, a contractual SLA, or 24×7 support.
