## The Open Source Solution for High-Performance Geospatial ETL & Analytics

Apache Sedona extends distributed compute frameworks to add support for spatial data types, spatial indexing, and efficient spatial query processing using Spatial SQL and Python.

With over 300 vector and raster Spatial SQL functions and support for multiple distributed compute engines including Apache Spark, Apache Flink, and Snowflake, as well as a purpose built engine in Rust with SedonaDB, Apache Sedona brings the most comprehensive support of Spatial SQL, python, R and Scala to parallel and scalable data processing environments.

Wherobots was founded by Jia Yu and Mo Sarwat, the researchers who created Apache Sedona at Arizona State University.

[![In this session, you'll learn how to seamlessly integrate Python and Wherobots to perform advanced spatial joins and analyses on geospatial data. Webinar Highlights: - Learn how to join datasets using spatial predicates like ST_Intersects to combine facilities with administrative boundaries—ensuring only relevant spatial relationships are processed. - See how to leverage the powerful ST_AKNN function to efficiently find the k-nearest neighbors for each facility. We’ll explore a Pythonic approach to identify the closest centroids to your facilities, ensuring a highly optimized query without the overhead of expensive cross joins. - Understand how to apply spatial filters to extract a targeted subset of your data. We'll walk through filtering facilities that fall within a specified geographic boundary. - Explore strategies like repartitioning by geohash to improve performance and reduce data shuffling during spatial joins, making your spatial queries scalable for large datasets. - Finally, learn how to visualize your spatial join results interactively using SedonaKepler and SedonaPyDeck, turning complex geospatial data into actionable insights with rich, interactive maps. [![Zonal statistics—like calculating average elevation or temperature over custom geometries—is one of the most powerful ways to combine raster and vector data. But when it comes to scaling up beyond a few polygons, traditional GIS tools often hit a wall. In this live session, we’ll show you how Wherobots makes large-scale zonal stats simple, fast, and scalable using RS_ZonalStats, a powerful function built for modern spatial SQL. You’ll see how easy it is to load vector features (like buildings or land parcels) and join them with cloud-hosted raster layers to compute meaningful insights—without slowdowns. We’ll walk through: - How to prepare and load both raster and vector data - Using RS_ZonalStats to compute min, max, mean, and more - A real-world demo with Overture Maps and elevation data from AWS - Tips for optimizing and scaling your raster analysis workflows Whether you’re analyzing terrain, land cover, or climate data, this is your shortcut to making raster analysis work at any scale. 0:00 Introduction 4:38 Overview of RS_ZonalStatsAll and ST_Isochrones 7:48 Set up 10:17 Spatial join between raster and polygon dataset 13:15 Accessing and preparing raster data 18:59 Load isoochrone polygons from Iceberg 21:16 Compute zonal statistics 26:05 Results and efficiency 28:41 Further exploration and Q&A Sign up for / Get Started Wherobots for free: https://bit.ly/3Q9PcPe](https://wherobots.com/wp-content/plugins/youtube-feed-pro/img/placeholder.png) Scaling Zonal Statistics: Fast Raster + Vector Joins with Wherobots](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI6_PsBobyA)

[![Ask Waldo a question about the physical world in plain English. Waldo, the AI agent from Wherobots, finds the right data in your catalog, asks what “best” means, maps the answer, ranks the results, and turns the work into a scheduled data pipeline. This video is a real Waldo session, sped up. The question: which parcels across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties are the best sites for single-family subdivisions and for 100 MW AI data centers, and who is the recorded owner? In this session, Waldo: • Found a saved five-county screen in the catalog with 16,385 housing candidates and 887 data-center candidates • Asked three questions before ranking anything • Mapped the top 10 sites for each use, including the data center leads against power lines tagged 115 kV and up • Ranked both lists with acreage, zoning and the recorded owner • Planned a weekly update and a monthly reconciliation, created both schedules paused for review, and ran one pilot of each (both succeeded) Waldo works with maps, satellite imagery, and your data. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is Apache Sedona?

Apache Sedona is the most widely deployed open-source distributed spatial engine in the world, with 80M+ downloads. It runs on Apache Spark and Apache Flink and supports spatial SQL, Python, Java, and Scala for processing geometry and raster data at scale.

### Is Apache Sedona open source?

Yes. Apache Sedona is an open-source distributed spatial engine. The code lives on GitHub (2,200 stars on this page’s stats), with an official Docker image, community office hours, and channels on X, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Discord.

### What is Apache Sedona software?

Apache Sedona is open-source software that extends distributed compute frameworks with spatial data types, spatial indexing, and Spatial SQL and Python capabilities. It also includes an engine purpose built for spatial data on Rust with SedonaDB as well as a framework for benchmarking spatial data processing with SpatialBench. For distributed compute it brings over 300 vector and raster Spatial SQL functions to parallel environments including Apache Spark, Apache Flink, and Snowflake.

### How do I get started with Apache Sedona?

The easiest way to get started with Apache Sedona is to sign up to Wherobots Cloud and use it there directly. It’s fully managed, requires no infrastructure, and runs many times faster and more cost efficiently, especially at scale. And it comes with a built-in data catalog, key features like MCP server integration with VS Code or Claude, and more new capabilities coming every day. Learn about the price performance of WherobotsDB over open source Apache Sedona [here](https://wherobots.com/blog/wherobotsdb-is-3x-faster-with-up-to-45-better-price-performance/).

### Who created Apache Sedona?

Apache Sedona was created by researchers Jia Yu and Mo Sarwat at Arizona State University. They later founded Wherobots. Any Apache Sedona workload runs on Wherobots with zero code changes.

### Can I run Apache Sedona workloads on Wherobots?
